Part I—The Bible
Note: During my 32 years as a preacher, several times I did a series of sermons on “What I believe about….” Every time I did it, people responded positively. They appreciated the simple statements about what I believed about certain issues. This series of blogs continue that same concern.
The books of Isaiah and Colossians both take up the issue of whom and what we listen to as a source of spiritual direction. In both cases, the first readers of those books too often paid attention to voices that led them away from God. Both Isaiah and Paul pointed in another direction.
We face the same situation. Our culture overflows with contradictory voices telling us what to think and believe. How do I sort it out?
I believe that the Bible is the Word of God. Isaiah stresses that God revealed Himself through Scripture. God does not make mistakes and tells us the truth. I affirm that belief. I believe in the inerrancy of Scripture.
Paul in Colossians tells us that God’s Word touches on all parts of our life and works in every context in which we find ourselves. The Bible tells us Jesus is the answer to every critical life question. I believe in the infallibility of God’s Word.
In both Isaiah and Colossians the underlying issue revolves around trust. Am I willing to trust the quality of my life now and the destiny of my life for eternity to a web site or a book on the best seller list or the mantra of some scholar? My answer is “No.” The book I trust is Scripture. It is truth. It works.
That’s what I believe.
