FIXING BROKEN THINGS

Mark 8:22-25

BIBLE THOUGHT:   “Then he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and saw everything clearly” Mark 8:25 RSV).

As a child, I accidentally knocked my toy train onto the floor.  It broke.  I picked it up to take it to my father, because my dad could fix anything.

We know all about broken things:  Our possessions, our health, our families, our nation, sometimes even our spiritual congregations break.   We need to know somebody who can fix things.

Throughout the Bible, blindness symbolizes brokenness.  The story of the Bethsaida blind man, told only in Mark, reveals the difficulty of fixing broken things.   Despite the resistance, Jesus heals the blind man, and he “saw everything clearly.”

Mark’s Gospel presents Jesus as the one with authority over nature, disease and all things spiritual.  He calms storms.  He makes the blind see.  He points the way to the lost.

We know about our broken world.  So many things remind us of my broken toy and the Bethsaida blind man.  Fortunately we have Jesus who can fix anything.

Dear God,   We live in a broken world.  Thank you for sending Jesus to fix what we cannot fix.  In Jesus we pray, Amen.
