Making a Difference or Return on Investment

Everywhere we turn, critics of higher education press people like me for the financial return on the investment (ROI). Such demands have an appropriate place. However, not all of life can be reduced to numbers.

Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 15:58 that what we do for God is not in vain. Such investments may have a long payout. Sometimes we never see the result of what we do.

Remember when we work for Christ:

• You can make a difference even if the ROI looks bad.
• When you plant an acorn, you may never see the resulting towering oak.
• We build bridges for others that we may never use.
• Impatience on your part does not mean ineffectiveness on God’s part.

Whatever our financial ROI, we can be sure that God will make a difference through us.
