At graduation one of the things I mention to those who just finished getting their college degree is that “This place is always your home.” Years spent in college fill with transitions, memories and significant events. Those who live on our campus, who study in the library, and who make life decisions here, must know they are always welcome back.
Homecoming events provide an opportunity to capture that “going home again” feeling by gathering with fellow classmates, seeing former professors, and rejoining the coach and team one more time. On the school’s part, it makes us reflect on the work we do and honor those who make us so proud to be part of their lives.
All of us have some sour memories from our college years. At times, we can let those dark thoughts smother out the times of joy and the events of great satisfaction. Bitterness never makes for a happy life. Remembering the good in the past and reconnecting with people who played important roles in our lives almost always creates deep satisfaction and puts joy in our hearts.
Homecoming is not the only time to come home, but it is an important one. We’ll leave the light on for you.
