Complaints and Laments

By Harold Shank
Monday, November 2nd, 2015

Read the first dozen Psalms.  The writers lament (or as we say, complain) to God about their world.  Laments have a place.

However, complaints ring hollow when we grumble about troubles within our control.   Let me point to some common complaints that may be within our control:

  • Everybody seems to cheat or lie.
    • In Christian education we train students to be honest.
  • Immorality and lewdness seem to be everywhere.
    • In Christian education we treasure modesty and purity.
  • Organizations that sell the bodies of aborted babies.
    • In Christian education we teach students to value life.
  • The Supreme Court wants to redefine society’s core institutions.
    • In Christian education we still use the Bible as a dictionary

All of that to say, that there’s never been a greater need for institutions such as Ohio Valley University—schools that champion the Christian worldview. I hear people complain about the direction of the culture. Prayers in church lament that things are not the way they used to be. Folks I know point fingers at state lawmakers as the cause of the moral emptiness.  We lament too, but those complaints move us to action.
