When we moved to Memphis, I began volunteering for HopeWorks, a faith-based ministry dedicated to providing a second chance to men and women seeking to rebuild their lives through education, counseling, and spiritual growth. It was there, during my 17 years of service, that I was first paired with Belinda—a moment that changed my perspective on friendship and faith. 

Belinda dropped out of school in the 10th grade to care for her mother, who was battling cancer. Following her mother’s passing, Belinda was left to navigate life alone. On paper, our lives could not have been more different: she was a single black woman with limited resources; I was a white, married mother with a college degree and a comfortable life. Yet, as I got to know her, those differences evaporated.

What I found was Belinda desired the same things I did. She had a resilient spirit and a hunger for connection. I started driving her to the women’s class at church, which quickly became a highlight of our week. The class welcomed her with open arms, and she began growing in faith. Through the encouragement of that community and the guidance at HopeWorks, Belinda was baptized and soon after graduated from the program.

A week later, I received an anonymous donation of $100 to buy her a new back pack, notebooks, and supplies for her next step in education. It was a beautiful reminder that we all work together. I provided the transportation, the church provided the community, HopeWorks provided the education, and another provided the resources. We all used our gifts to walk alongside her, and in doing so, we all grew closer to God.
