Meeting Places and Precious Memories

By Harold Shank
Monday, July 8th, 2013

As I left for lunch a young couple pulled into the visitor’s parking place in front of the Stott’s Administration Center at OVU.   I watched at a distance as the young father helped his daughter out of her car seat.  I overheard their conversation.

He asked her, “Do you know who went to school here?”

She said with some innocence and child-like self-centeredness, “I did.”

It made me chuckle, but the father remained undeterred, “No, honey, your mother and I went to school here.  This is where we met.”

I didn’t hear any more, but then I didn’t need to.  My mind recreated the scene where these two young people came to a Christian college, and as they gained a valuable education they met their life-long mate.   I had just witnessed a precious memory moving to the next generation.

Later, I recalled the same experience for Sally and me.  Unknown to each other, from different parts of the world (Sally is from Ireland, I’m from Pennsylvania), reared in substantially different environments, our paths crossed in the midst of Christian education.

The values of Christian education go beyond finding a spouse.   But for many of us, like that young father, it’s something we want to pass on to the next generation.   Meeting places and precious memories.

I do believe so. I do believe your write-up will give the individuals a good showing. And they will show thanks to an individual later
